The TMJD Team Roundup, Part 4 — The Village That Helps You Thrive

Finding adequate care for your temporomandibular joint disorder might feel like searching for a needle in a haystack. Living with TMJD comes with enduring a ton of stigma and lack of education from too many medical providers — but it is important to not lose hope.

Amassing the right circle of caretakers is not only possible, but imperative to getting you the care you deserve. The true power of collaborative care lies in the ability of these practitioners to achieve their common goal: to provide effective TMJD relief to their patients.

When it comes to remedying and managing symptoms of TMJD, it truly takes a village of knowledgeable practitioners who will listen to your needs and give you the guidance and care you need and deserve.

Not every healthcare provider you see will be the perfect fit, and that's okay. Give yourself room for some trial and error. If you keep at it, you’re guaranteed to find your TMJD dream team.

Knowing that you have an effective team in your corner means a lot. But how do you ensure your healthcare providers are all working together effectively?

The answer lies in open, consistent communication and a shared commitment to work as a unit. Ideally, your support team should be in regular contact with one another — sharing findings, treatment plans, and progress notes to ensure that everyone is on the same page.

As the patient, you play a key role in promoting collaboration among your healthcare providers. Don't hesitate to ask questions, share information, and express your preferences or concerns. If you feel like there's a disconnect or that your concerns aren't being heard, speak up and advocate for yourself. Remember, your TMJD support team is there to work with you, and the more engaged and empowered you are in your own care, the better your chances are of finding lasting relief.

Imagine your PT releases trigger points in your neck and shoulder muscles, while your SLP guides you through proper swallowing techniques. Your myofunctional therapist complements these efforts by helping you retrain your jaw muscles and break bad oral habits like clenching or nail-biting. To round out your treatment, your psychologist shares mindfulness practices which can help you manage the stress and anxiety that also come with chronic pain.

This illustrates how TMJD is a complex issue that may require well-rounded treatment. Of course, every case is unique, and the specific combination of practitioners that's right for you will depend on your individual needs and goals.

With the current state of the medical system, it's easy to feel like just another number in a sea of patients. But you're not alone in this fight. There are millions of people out there who know exactly what you're going through. With them stands a growing community of practitioners fighting to change the TMJD narrative – pushing for better research, education, and care.

The bottom line is clear: a patient-centered, multidisciplinary approach to TMJD treatment works. Don't settle for a one-size-fits-all — you deserve a treatment plan that is as unique as you are, one that addresses your specific needs and goals.

I personally want you to feel empowered enough to seek out a team of professionals who are passionate about helping you heal, who will listen to your concerns, and who will work together to support you.

With the right support and a commitment to self-advocacy, you’re on the path to TMJD recovery. Your journey to healing starts now, and we're here for you every step of the way.
